To date we have not understood what this opera is about. Humiliating a creature because it is ugly or strange is disgusting behavior. The nymph Plateé and the whole society is a victim of their stupidity and superficiality.
I agree with you and maybe that's the purpose of this opera, a criticism of the society in this sense.
